Twelve years ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard bought a traditional townhouse in Brooklyn to raise their families. Now that their daughters are going to school outside the neighborhood, the actors have decided to move and are proposing a $ 4.599 million home.

"The motivation to move was to be able to walk [the children] at school, "said Ms. Gyllenhaal.

The couple purchased the Park Slope property of 3,600 square feet in 2006 for $ 1.91 million, according to public records. "We moved there when I was pregnant with my first daughter," Ms. Gyllenhaal said. "We were living in a rented loft in Manhattan and we were looking to make a home."

Ms. Gyllenhaal and Mr. Sarsgaard have updated the property, including heating and plumbing. Hiring architect Elizabeth Roberts, who lived above their loft in Manhattan, they added modern touches to the house, such as large glass doors to enjoy the southern exposure of the house.

"My husband is a competent and excellent gardener," said Ms. Gyllenhaal. "One of the things he really wanted was that the backyard be facing south, with direct sunlight." Over the years, Mr. Sarsgaard has maintained plants including cherry trees and a lemon Meyer potted that he brings to the interior each winter.

The first floor has a living room and a kitchen with exposed beams. One of the favorite elements of Mrs. Gyllenhaal's renovation is a modern fireplace from the Danish company Rais nestled inside the kitchen stove. "The stove is surrounded by Heath ceramic tile, so it has that Californian feeling," she said.

On the floor of the living room, the couple installed a film projector that falls from the ceiling. "We want to see big and beautiful films," said Ms. Gyllenhaal. As they get older, their two daughters turned the living room floor into a music room.

The third floor houses the master suite, with a private bathroom and a desk. The top floor contains two rooms for their daughters, with a workspace shared between the two.
