Andrew Dominik – Film Director, Screen Writer
New Zealand-born Australian film director and screenwriter Andrew Dominik was born in born in 1967. He is the director of “Chopper” and “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”.
Dominik has lived in Australia since he was 2 years old and graduated from Melbourne’s Swinburne Film School in 1988. His career in films began in 2000 when he directed Chopper based on notorious Australian criminal Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read, starring Eric Bana and Simon Lyndon. The Australian Film Institute awarded the film with Best Director.
His next film “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, based on the novel of the same name which he came across in a second-hand bookstore.. Pitt was a big fan of Dominik’s first feature “Chopper”, and he contacted the director.
“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’s” release was delayed largely due to studio interference with the film’s editing process. The disputes during post-production lasted for over a year before a final version was settled upon. Over an hour of scenes was deleted for the theatrical version, but Dominik remarked he was still very proud of the film the way it is now.The film garnered two Academy Award nominations: “Best Cinematography” and “Best Supporting Actor”.
Dominik reteamed with Brad Pitt in their second collaboration a thriller/dark comedy based on George V. Higgins’ Boston-set crime novel “Cogan’s Trade”. “Cogan’s Trade” has been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
One of Dominik’s next projects is “Blonde”, based on Joyce Carol Oates’s fictional Marilyn Monroe memoir of the same name, which was scheduled to start shooting in January 2011 but the project was put on hold when he announced his Cogan’s Trade adaptation. Naomi Watts is slated to play Monroe.
Alphan Eşeli – Director, Founder of ISTANBUL’74
Following his BA, Alphan moved to New York and graduated from the New York Institute of Technology with a MA degree in film-making. He directed commercials and music videos. He returned to Istanbul in 2003 to make commercials. In 2006 he won the prestigious Kristal Elma “Basari Belgesi” for best Director. He was a finalist in the London Advertising Awards and New York International awards. Eşeli is also a photographer and has shot campaigns with Gisele Bündchen, Jessica Stam, Erin Wasson, Heidi Mount, Sasha Pivovarova, Olivier Martinez and Angela Lindvall.
In 2009, Eşeli co-founded ISTANBUL 74 with Demet Müftüoğlu Eşeli to widen the territories of his creative vision.
In 2011 he directed the music video for Hole’s song “Samantha”, in Istanbul. He directed the 2012 film Return- Sarıkamıs 1915 which will be released in early November 2012.
