Hulu describes the series as "a girl who tries to escape from the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother". But that only comes to the surface …
Munchausen Syndrome proxy is like a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The child's parent or caregiver fabricates fake symptoms or deliberately causes symptoms that make it seem like the child is not right. This is sometimes done to get sympathy and attention. Gypsy was wheelchair-bound, told by her mother that she had leukemia, suffered epileptic seizures and at one point had to be fed with a snake until the frightening pretension eventually crumbled and resulted in the death of Dee Dee. With the help of her mother's mental illness as her defense, Gypsy claimed that Dee Dee held her against her will, physically and mentally abused her, forced her to take medication she did not need and had to undergo unnecessary medical procedures. Friends and neighbors believed that Gypsy was fighting against cancer and that Gypsy and Dee Dee received many charitable donations.
