Best curling iron - we rate the top rated curlers in the UK
king of the box

When did I find the best curling iron so damn confusing? There are countless styles of magic wand out there and they all give different curls; from tightly defined curls to loose beach-like waves. But how do you know which form magnifier will work for you? Well, I tried to get some of the mystery out of the curl shop, by showing you exactly what each style of tang / wand / styler does with the hair (or my hair, to be precise). Because I don't know about you, but when it comes to beauty, I want visual aids. I want to see if the results are worth it to drop all that hard earned money … So, first things first, a little background information for you: I have long (ish) hair and it is a bit dry at the ends thanks to a fading balayage. This means that the medium and long ends hold well against a curl, but that the roots tend to fall flat. For this experiment, I tested each of the 11 curlers on freshly washed hair, with only a sprayed heat protection to prepare. This is what happened …Photos courtesy of King Of The Booth

ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong

Best curling iron for: a soft waveThis curling iron with large barrel has a ceramic coating that ensures that the waves look smooth and shiny. It is 32 mm wide, so if you want to go loose polishedLooking curls, it's worth investing in. Yes, it is expensive, but this curling iron is designed with the & # 39; user experience & # 39; in mind. It has a cool tip so you can't burn those fingers, a super long cord, and it automatically shuts itself off if it remains unattended for 30 minutes – so you don't get it & # 39;did I leave my tongs? & # 39; fear, on your way to work every morning. Temperature: Heat to 185 ° C, curling the hair without damaging the strands. Endurance: Loose waves tend to fall out much faster than tighter curls, especially if – like me – your hair is straight. That said, my waves remained intact all day and evening (yes, after styling I charged hair spray). The next day my hair still had a slight bow and volume.

ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand

Buy Net-A-Porter now, £ 120
Best curling wand for: defined waves The tapered course of this wand goes from 28 mm to 23 mm, which means that you get a looser voluminous curl at the top of your hair, and tighter, defined curls to the ends. As with the first GHD pliers, the barrel has a ceramic coating, so the hair remains smooth and lint-free. Waves look clean and defined after curling, but you can opt for a crumpled finish by letting your fingers run through the lengths and blasting the rods with some texture spray. It also has a cool tip to prevent burned fingers and a 30-minute automatic power switch for peace of mind. Temperature: It heats up to 185 ° C so that the hair will curl without damaging the strands.
Endurance: Ah-mazing lasting power. If your hair never holds a curl, make sure you try this wand once. Once curled, my hair remained wavy until I then washed it with just a light drop.

Mark Hill Pick N Mix Handle + Ellipse Barrel Waver

Shop now, £ 29.98Best curling wand for: Shiny curls For less than £ 30, I didn't expect too many of these doubts, but I'm happy to admit that I was 10,000% wrong. Temperature: While the magic wand gives a dreamy wave, you don't get that everyone beautiful sensations. There is an on / off switch to activate the heating, but no temperature button, so you get what you get when it comes to heat. Cloud Nine The Waving Wand

Buy now, £ 99 Best curling wand for: a faux hair dryerIf you love the look of a bouncy castle, but have no idea how to recreate the look at home, then you need this swing tool in your life. The barrel is huge, at 36 mm it is one of the thickest I have found, which means that the hair instead of hair curls, it just gives a soft & # 39; S & # 39; bend to the sections . After styling, the hair looks fuller and there is a thickness through the medium and long sides. Temperature: With the temp control you can switch between high, medium and low heat or choose the automatic temperature setting.
Endurance: It depends on your hair type. The subtle wave lasted only a few hours in my fine, straight hair (even with one lot of hair spray). But a colleague with naturally thick, curly hair used the magic wand and her waves stayed on all day.

Toni & Guy Style Fix Curler

Buy Debenhams now, £ 25
Best curling iron for: Traveling First, this tiny curling iron is cute. It is so small, but somehow the barrel is large enough to give clean, ribbon-like curls. Because it is a travel companion, it is shorter than a regular styler, so if you have long (ish) hair like me, you may walk out of the room on the tongs to curl the ends. This means that curls look through the top-to-middle lengths, but looser at the ends. Although the mini-tongs save space in your suitcase, the only drawback is the length of the cord, it is only 1.8 m, so you must stand upright beautiful close to an outlet while styling. Temperature: Small but powerful, this tongue reaches 210 ° C, so it has the power to turn even thick, unmanageable strands into a ringlet that will remain intact throughout the day.
Endurance: The high heat means that the hair keeps tangling until you wash next time, but make sure you pre-coat your hair with heat protection to prevent unnecessary damage.

You have to take a 1-2 inch wide hair piece and let it go through the plates to start, then you press a button and the barrel starts spinning. When it turns, the lock of hair is pulled through the plates and turned, creating a soft curl. Essentially, hair curls the same way you can with hair straighteners, but the rotating loop makes it easy for the awkward of us to cheat smooth, well-rounded waves.Temperature: The adjustable temperature controller has five settings that go up to 230 ° C, so make sure you use a heat protection spray.Endurance: This gave me beachy, Victoria & # 39; s Secret-style waves that lasted two days.

T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand

Buy now, £ 199
Best curling wand for: versatility It has three interchangeable poles that can be attached to the base, a tapered cone, a large barrel, and a medium-sized cylinder (which I used for the photo). Temperature: There are 5 heat settings that reach 210 ° C, making it suitable for all hair types. Endurance: The softness of the waves means that they do not have that much endurance. I charged hair spray, but after a day the curls were pretty exhausted.
