She did it again.
On Monday night, Rihanna arrived at the tail end of the Met Gala red carpet with one goal in mind: crushing all the looks that came before her.
Her last champion round came at the 2015 Met Gala, when her yellow, fur-lined cape became one of the best memes of the year.
This year, Anna Wintour’s annual bash honored Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo, a Japanese designer revered in the fashion world for her gender-bending, outrageous, quizzical, explosive fashion. As her husband recently told The New York Times: “If everybody thought it was beautiful, it would be time for Rei to stop. The times we’ve had standing ovations, when absolutely everybody loved the show, were the times she has worried the most.”
Cue Rihanna, who majestically donned a 3-D concoction straight off Kawakubo’s Fall 2016 runway, The exploding flower look, reports Vogue, was inspired “by 18th-century ‘punks’ and consisted of floral fabrics, layered and pulled apart like petals.”
It’s also inherently impractical: You can’t sit in it, much less pass a glass of water to your table-mate in it. (Correction: You can sit in it!) But it’s the Met Gala! Do they even eat dinner there? No need!
Rihanna’s fans cheered loudly.
